Flights Orchard farm at Little Marcle, is 90 acres of clay/loam soils and has been in Organic production for 13 years. It is the only long term, sustainable form of fruit and vegetable production and is reliant upon a balanced approach and good crop rotation.
At any one time a
maximum of 75% of the land is in production and all the crops are rotated
every year. That means there is no mono culture and that bio diversity is a
great deal higher than in conventional systems. We grow about 20 different crops each year from potatoes & strawberries to radish & sweet corn. As big a range as is practical to give great variety and freshness in the boxes each week. Free range Hampshire pigs are another part of the farming enterprise. We have 6 sows and a boar called Badger. The sows have about 1 3/4 litters per year and have special nursery kennels. We occasionally in bad weather move the pigs into a deeply strawed yard, but they are generally (piglets as well) able to roam the fields as they please. This again is a slower far less intensive method of production with far more contented animals.
